Can Yoga Help
BiPolar Disorder?

Bi-Polar disorder, also known as manic depression, is common. Statistics indicated that 20 out of every 1000 people suffer from this disorder. Better ways of diagnosing the disorder and increased awareness of the symptoms have recently alerted the medical community to just how prevalent this illness has become. It’s often lumped with other major mental illnessed, though unlike schizophrenia, there are no changes in the brain tissue. Yoga has been shown to help direct the mood and energy swings into more productive avenues.

As the name implies, Bi-Polar involved swing from happy, giddy, energetic moods to to deep depression. Some common signs of this disorder include sleeplessness, weight loss, and in severe cases, visual and auditory hallucinations. f this energy is allowed to continue to build, it makes the brain cells disorganized and can cause cell damage.

Yoga can help sufferers to get in touch with their bodies, make them more aware of their mood swings, and help them to stay calm. Focusing on Yoga poses, breathing and being in the moment will often help to bring control back to the sufferer. This does not preclude professional medical treatment and properly prescribed medication for the disorder. However, once the patient has been diagnosed and medication is started, Yoga can help them concentrate on raising the level of awareness to the needs of their body.

Yoga is a great tool for mentally challenging your body to slow down, and reduce the mood swings. Concentrating on poses, meditating, practicing breathing techniques ... these are all powerful tools for helping to reduce anxiety and creating new awareness. Medication should be taken to help stabilize the energy in the brain cells, while clearing out old negative thinking patterns and releasing past traumas are also important to treating a Bi-Polar disorder.

By listening to your body, practicing concentration and breathing techniques, and following healthy eating patterns, you can reduce your need for large amounts of medications which could potentially damage otherwise healthy organs. The importance of meditation and breathing can’t be emphasized enough in helping to treat patients with Bi-Polar disorder. Yoga helps you achieve the balance of emotions your body needs to produce a healthy and happier person.
